Cutest Little Red Headed Doll! 1940's Hard Plastic Promotional Doll was made to go with a Pop-Tune!
I thought this doll was compo because her hands look just like compo hands, but actually she's made of something else which seems to be hard plastic. When I tap on her she feels and sounds like heavy plastic. There are NO odors at all (that I could tell) so I don't think she was made with the usual plastic stuff that other hard plastic dolls were made of.
She's a Patsy type with her right arm bent a little at the elbow. This little redhead is 17 inches tall. The box is the same length. The width of her box is a little over 7 inches.
She is called the "Cutest Little Redheaded Doll". There was a song to go with her. I'm not sure what the promoters all had in mind, but I think they were hoping their song would be a huge hit and the dolls would sell because of the song. An old Billboard newspaper article from January 29, 1949 mentioned a blurb "TUNE TOUTING - Charles Orr, WGST Atlanta, says that "Cutest Little Red Headed Doll" (B side of an MGM platter that came out about a year ago) could be made into a Hit Parade tune with a little publisher assistance."
Another ad says the song was produced by REGENT Records on the back side of an album sung by Johnny Thompson titled, "You're in Love with Everyone". Johnny Thompson was "the singing star of NBC."
So . There are Regent records out there that have the song on it: Regent #110 with Johnny Thompson. It would be fun to hear the song.
So that's as much of the story as I know. Meanwhile, the doll is adorable. Based on when the song was promoted, I'm guessing the doll was produced around 1947 as well.
She is a strung doll with joints at shoulders, hips and neck. Her stringing is still nice and snug. She is made of the same plastic materials all over; and the surface is painted. Doll is 17 inches tall.
Sleepy eyes are bright blue with full lashes and they work fine. She has some cute little teeth in her partially open mouth. Face paint is beautiful.
Red mohair wig is in the original style (especially cute in front where it's rolled.) Her outfit, shoes and socks are like new with very little yellowing (most of the time the yellowing is due to old starch.) The doll didn't need any cleaning though. Hair bow is original, too.
The box is in very good condition too, even the tissue paper is still there.
